System security
So who knows your network Administrator Password?
Do you know your network Administrator Password?
Network system security is a big subject to cover in a Blog so I will just talk about the top issues that can cause the most trouble if they are overlooked.
Administrator Password.
Always keep the Network Administrator Password secure, only allow this password to be known by a few people, preferably Director level or higher. This sounds obvious but I have heard some people shout the admin password across a room when someone asks for it. As soon as everyone knows the Admin password your system security is flawed. If you suspect that your password is well known please give K&M a call and we will change it for you.User Passwords.
Why does every user need to have a secure password. Again this is something that gets overlooked, lets say that you use excel to keep a track of wages or payroll. You may have an employee that updates this form for you, and they may keep this file in their own folder on the server. OK so they should password protect the Excel file but what if the file is not protected. As obvious as it may seem without a secure password you may as well just forget security altogether.Folder security.
You may already be aware that your Windows Server can be set to allow different people access to specific folders on your server. No point to this if everyone uses the same password though.Passwords
Passwords should contain letters, numbers and at least one symbol, say @ or £, I would advise that you should also have at least 6 characters in your password.Remote Passwords
These are passwords that you use at home or on the move to connect to your server. These should be set as secure as you can make them. We usually go for about 15 or more characters with a combination of letters, numbers and symbols. If you need any help with your system security then please give us a call and we will do our best to help. Be aware that unless we can verify who you are we will not give out any passwords.
